These products have made my life with my Havanese even better! So I am passing on my recommendations here...
Here is a list of our favorite products that we use with our Havanese!
(Please check the dog food section for my
recommendations on foods and treats!)
The BEST Havanese grooming book I have ever read is:
From Nose to Tail a Havanese Grooming Handbook by the Havanese Fanciers of Canada.
A rotating comb for tangles
Remember to always be very gentle! Also daily grooming will make tangles a thing of the past! These rotating combs are extra helpful for getting out tangles.
Long pin brush
Chris Christensen 27mm Oval Pin brush. Yes, this is a bit of a splurge at $27 but wow, what a game changer! Your Havanese's coat will love you! (This is not as sharp as most pin brushes you might be familiar with. The pins are much more flexible.)
A more affordable option:
Very fine toothed comb
Gentle is the key word here, don't pull too hard! This comb is a wonderful trick I read about that works great for cleaning the fur around the eyes.
All Natural Oatmeal Shampoo
Paraben free and natural shampoo with conditioner from Pro Pet Works. I also like any tear free, paraben free shampoos for my dogs. The less chemicals the better.
Pet Nail Grooming Tool
I really like using pet nail grinders for my dogs nails. Their great, and not nearly as scary as a regular nail trimmer. I am always worried I might cut too far, but with a nail grinder, it is easier to avoid the quick of the nail. (Be careful as your Havanese gets longer fur to keep the fur pulled back while trimming the nail. Otherwise the fur could get twirled up in the grinder.)
Puppia Harness Soft B Vest
You always want to walk your Havanese with a harness since it is much safer and prevents injury of their delicate trachea, etc. My favorite vest is the Puppia Harness Soft B Vest. Milo at 12 pounds wears a Large, Hazel at 9 pounds fits a medium. Your puppy should fit a small when it's time to go home.
House-training Helps - Enzyme Removing Spray
With a new puppy in the house-training process, you are bound to have some accidents. When this happens, thoroughly clean the area with a cleaner that breaks down enzymes. Normal household cleaners will NOT work. When all traces of his previous accident are not removed -his powerful sense of smell will tell him that's a spot to go to again. By cleaning with a cleaner that removes all traces of his previous accident, you will move forward much faster in your house-training process. Here is a link to my favorite:
Toothbrush and toothpaste
Toy breeds are prone to tooth decay unlike other larger breeds. (If you've had a large breed dog in the past, you may have never had to worry too much about their teeth) However, toy breeds need to have their teeth cleaned. This is not an old age issue. By the age of three they can already have gum disease if their teeth have not been properly cared for. If you brush and keep your dogs teeth clean and healthy you will avoid the big dental bills and problems later on.
I love to leave my dogs with a puzzle whenever I have to run to the store or leave them on their own. It's a great way to keep them busy instead of staring out the window waiting for my return! Break up their treats into small pieces and fill the puzzles with them.
This is a great one to start with -
This is the advanced puzzle - for your little smartie!
Puppy Play Yard
I love to have a play area set up where I know a puppy can be safe when I have to run to the grocery store, etc. I make one end a potty area with a potty pad, and the other end has toys, food, water, and puppy's bed. My favorite play yard is the toddler version (I know they have one with a doggy door, but while your pup is young you certainly need the doggy door locked to keep puppy safe if you have choose that option):
North States 6 panel Superyard
It's cheapest here at Walmart -
It's also available on Amazon -
Buddy Wash 2 in 1 Shampoo
This is another great shampoo that I love. It is a 2 in 1 combo that has conditioner, but it is even better when you use it with the conditioner rinse that I recommend also, as an extra step. I really like the Lavender Mint scent too.
Buddy Wash Conditioner Rinse
Even though the Buddy Wash Shampoo/Conditioner is a 2 in 1, I still also like to use this conditioner to just help keep my dog's coat nice, tangle free, and extra shiny. I love the smell of this too.
Dog Food and Treats:
Please visit the "Dog Food What You Need to Know" section because we have a big selection with all of the dog food and treats we recommend for your new puppy.
Crate - Size 30 inch Double door w/divider - ***PLEASE READ the section on crates in my dog training section before purchasing!
The 30 inch is the best size to buy. I do not recommend any smaller. Even my smallest 8 lb Havanese need the 30 inch crate to actually be able to stretch out. Any smaller is too small. Don't worry, this crate comes with a handy divider that will make it smaller for tiny puppies.
Petrodex Enzymatic Dog Toothpaste
